Online casino rules in Ontario

The casino at 30 Bay St. is a building people walk into, not a website. Online play in Ontario has its own rules, and the Bay Street desk sets them out below.

How the online market works

Ontario has a regulated online casino market. A private site must meet two conditions. It must be registered by the AGCO, the regulator. It must also have an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario, known as iGO. The iGO directory lists the authorized sites, and any site name can be checked against it.

OLG.ca is the government-run online casino. Online play is for people 19 or older who are physically in Ontario while they play. A site that takes Ontario players without AGCO registration is not a legal operator in Ontario. Being reachable from a screen in Ontario does not make a site legal here.

BetGuard for online sites

iGaming Ontario runs BetGuard, at betguard.ca. One sign-up opts a person out of every regulated online gambling site in Ontario, OLG.ca included. The term can be 6 months, 1 year, 5 years or a custom term.

BetGuard does not cover casinos people walk into, such as the one on Bay Street. Those use My PlayBreak, OLG's self-exclusion program. Self-exclusion means a person asks to be kept out for a set time. To enrol in My PlayBreak, call the OLG Support Centre at 1-800-387-0098, ask staff at a casino, or see a PlaySmart Centre.

How this guide is paid

The Bay Street desk is paid through links on the home page only. Each one is marked Ad: a button in the menu, a block below the first screen and a block near the end. They go to one private online casino partner that pays the guide a commission, and the partner can change. It is a separate private business, not the casino on Bay Street, not Gateway Casinos and not OLG.

This guide takes no bets and opens no accounts. Any online site, the partner included, can be checked against the iGO directory of authorized sites.

Short questions, short answers

Is online casino play legal in Ontario?

Yes, on regulated sites. A private site needs AGCO registration and an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario. OLG.ca is the government-run online casino. Players must be 19 or older and physically in Ontario.

How can someone check an online casino site?

Look for the site in the directory of authorized sites that iGaming Ontario publishes. A site that takes Ontario players without AGCO registration is not a legal operator in Ontario.

Can someone in Michigan play on an Ontario site?

The Ontario rules do not allow it. Online play in Ontario is for people 19 or older who are physically in Ontario while they play.

Why does the home page have Ad links?

The links are how the guide is paid. They go to one private online casino partner that pays a commission, and that partner can change. The guide is not the casino and is not connected with Gateway Casinos or OLG.
